Dunstaffnage Castle

A visit to Oban is not complete without popping in to visit Dunstaffnage Castle. The castle is one of the oldest, dating back to before 1240, and was the base for the MacDougall clan. Being close to the village of Dunbeg makes it the perfect place for locals and visitors to walk around and enjoy the grounds, woodland, chapel and the castle itself, with the chance to immerse themselves in its fascinating history.

Why visit Dunstaffnage Castle?

It is a key castle in the area to visit – and is an excellent choice for families of mixed ages. It is another key site for Clan MacDougall and was used as a stronghold to secure the waters around Oban and the Inner Hebrides. Believed to have been built before 1240, this castle is of key significance to Scottish History. Dunstaffnage Castle was captured by the famous Robert the Bruce in 1308. Also, this castle is famous for its role during the Jacobite Rebellion. Flora MacDonald (who is believed to have assisted Bonnie Prince Charlie to escape across the sea, dressed as a woman) was held at Dunstaffnage Castle in 1746 until she was moved to London. A castle steeped in Scottish history and intrigue – it must be one of the top things to do when you are visiting Oban.
