Oban Sportive 2019

Mar 07, 2019

Start your 2019 sportive season with the action packed Oban Sportive!

This year we have the two classic road routes - the Loch Avich 56 mile route and the Loch Awe 87 mile route, both mostly along quiet back roads on Scotland's adventure coast and the banks of Loch Awe. New for 2019 we are offering an alternative 56 mile gravel route with forest stages suitable for gravel/cross riders. All the routes take you through some of the most stunning scenery in the UK with marked routes, marshals, feed stations and a real Scottish welcome.

You can make a weekend of it and join us for the Ben Cruachan Inn Hill Climb on the Saturday afternoon. The private road climbs 2.7 miles and approximately 1,044 feet up Ben Cruachan to the dam. Oban Distillery, the main sponsor, will be providing the iconic start and finish for the Sportive and Markus Stitz, the legendary round the world single speeder and creator of the Wild about Argyll Trail, will be giving a talk about his travels in the distillery bar on the Saturday night, and will ride the hill climb and sportive both on his singlespeed. All this is included in the one entry price of £35 per rider!

Because the event is sponsored by the Oban Distillery, Bid4Oban (the local Business Improvement District which aims to improving Oban as a commercial and tourist destination), with further possible sponsorship from Aggregate Industries (Glensanda Quarry) and Dawnfresh Seafoods Ltd, as well as assistance from Wild About Argyll (part of the Argyll and the Isles Tourism Co-operative Ltd), it is intended that all the costs of the Sportive will be covered and all proceeds from entries will be given to the Rotary Club of Oban to allocate to local good causes.

The Sportive, organised jointly by the North Argyll Cycle Club and the Rotary Club of Oban, has raised over £15,000 over the last 6 years, all of which has been disbursed to good causes such as local schools, local charity projects and other local initiatives for improving amenities and social interactions.

More information about the Sportive and how to enter can be found at on Markus Stitz at
