BID4Oban (Oban’s Business Improvement District) and The Port of Oban Cruise Group have joined forces with the Scottish Tourist Guides Association in an exciting new venture that will see the town offering walking tours to visitors and residents.
A total of 12 individuals have now received training to an industry leading standard, which will qualify them as Yellow Badge tourist guides. The two weeks of training plus extensive home study was undertaken by Patricia Blain, STGA Training Manager and Stewart Wood, Lead Trainer.
This initiative is a result of the number of cruise ships visiting Oban over the summer months. Both organisations realised the opportunity to further enhance visitors’ experiences in the town. The tours will not be restricted to cruise ship passengers and it is hoped to organise daily tours for anyone visiting Oban over the summer season.
Elaine Robertson, Chair of The Port of Oban Cruise Group commented, “These are exciting times for the Cruise Group and establishing Yellow Badge Certified Guides to show off our town will keep Oban one step ahead in providing an excellent tourist experience."
Andrew Spence of BID4Oban agreed, saying, “Yellow Badge Guides will further enhance what Oban has to offer visitors and encourage them to stay longer in the town.”
The new guides have had to pay a contribution towards their training however BID4Oban funded the training of the two pupils from Oban High School. This project could not have gone ahead with out the support of the Oban Common Good Fund, BID4Oban Ltd and Argyll and Bute Council and Scottish Tourist Guides Association.
The guides have their final assessments on 19th April and we wish them all the very best of luck.
