Here's something to get your teeth into! There are new trails being added all the time and of course the long established Seafood Trail is always popular. There's an Oban Seafood Trail too but here's a few of the more unusual ones for the Seafood Capital of Scotland....
Isle of Mull Cheese has been producing award winning cheeses since the 1980s at Sgriob-ruadh Farm near Tobermory, using only the finest quality milk from their own herd. Jeff and Chris Reade, along with their four sons, use old-fashioned methods to make several popular varieties, including Traditional Isle of Mull, Hebridean Blue and Tobermory Truckles. The cheeses are made from unpasteurised milk, and the natural flora gives them deep, multi-layered flavours. Visitors are welcome to the farm to see the family at work and browse the shop. Isle of Mull Cheese can also be found at fine shops throughout Argyll. These days, the third generation is training in the family business, so we can look forward to many more years of this local treasure.
Ice Cream Trail
You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream! Folks in Oban are shouting because we are lucky to have two outstanding entries on Scotland’s Ice Cream Trail.
The Pokey Hat on George Street in Oban, with its iconic giant cone, is a favourite stop for locals and visitors alike, who love to grab a treat and enjoy the prime view over the bay. They serve up milkshakes, floats malts and sundaes, and, of course, the traditional pokey hat- all featuring their handmade Italian style ice cream. There are so many luscious handmade flavours from which to choose, from traditional to innovative- think banana chocolate chip, salted caramel and Turkish delight-you may just have to get two or three.
Loch Melfort Hotel, south of Oban in Arduaine, is renowned for its gourmet fare, and its famous handmade ice cream is the icing on the cake, so to speak. Head chef Mike Knowles and his team use local ingredients that they source, grow or forage themselves, to produce luxurious flavours such as peanut fudge, honeycomb and almond milk. Enjoy as dessert or get a pot to take home or eat while wandering around Arduaine Gardens next door- the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
Chocolate may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Scottish food, but Oban is home to two world class chocolate makers. Of course, cocoa is not grown here, but our chocolatiers source only the highest quality, fairly traded beans. Then they make the magic happen with the finest Scottish cream and butter, along with other quality local ingredients, such as berries, herbs, whisky and liquors.
Oban Chocolate Company on Corran Esplanade is very popular with locals and out of towners, cranking out batches of traditional and original flavours of all kinds, from the expected (like strawberry creams) to the more unusual (like Marmite). You can even see the team at work behind the glass. With a lovely bay view shop and café, it’s the perfect place to stop in for a hot chocolate and sweet treat. The cure for a rainy day in Oban? A tall coffee and a pot of rich chocolate fondue, accompanied by a variety of dippers, such as strawberries and shortbread…yum!
Logan Chocolates on Soroba Road in Oban is another star on the Scotland Chocolate Trail. They do hand-made truffles and filled chocolates, including their popular whisky filled varieties. Logan specialises in bespoke designs, and can make any occasion more delicious- and beautiful- with their unique creations. Look for Logan Chocolates at fine outlets around Argyll.
