Etive Restaurant ends incredibly successful first year on high note

Nov 19, 2018

Etive Restaurant ended their first year at Stevenson Street in Oban with yet another national recognition as they picked up the Rising Star Award for the Highland region from the Highland and Island Tourism Awards 2018.

Etive opened on January 6th, 2018 after a 12-week refurbishment by Chef Patron John McNulty and Sommelier Patron David Lapsley, who carried out all building works themselves.

Building from the pairs’ previous 2 AA Rosette and Michelin rated restaurant at the Taynuilt Hotel, the new site of Etive Restaurant in Oban gave both even more of a chance to impart their visions and ideas for what they wanted Etive Restaurant to be. John is the only chef in the kitchen, cooking the food he loves and serving it the way he loves to eat it and out front, David’s love of service and how the restaurant flows is evident, in everything from the table settings and the glassware to the vast drinks list of wines, gins and whiskies specially chosen to compliment the kitchen offering.

September and October has seen Etive begin to really put their stamp on Oban’s dining scene as they reached Number One on TripAdvisor, and achieved a Michelin Red plate and 2 Couverts for service in the 2019 Michelin guide, in addition to the recent award.

For John and David though the real marker of how well the restaurant is being received comes from the number of repeat custom that the it enjoys.

“I would never have imagined the local support and the frequency that those living in Oban dine in our restaurant, David said. “It is fantastic for us and really keeps us focused to maintain the standards and offering the experience they have had now time and time again.

With the completion of the first year approaching the boys are very optimistic for year two.

“Building on what we have achieved this year is key for us and we hope to build more direct working relationships with local producers to really focus the food offering,” shared John. “I personally look forward to having the AA in sometime over 2019, hoping we are back on their radar, and we can build on from what we achieved previously at Taynuilt. That said the awards are great when they come but the primary focus is the day to day and our regular diners.”
