A visit to our award winning heritage centre on the beautiful island of Lismore gives a wonderful insight into the island’s history, and the many and varied stories of the people who have lived and worked on the island.
The Island of Lismore has been populated since prehistoric times, and the Heritage Centre uses local archaeological finds, artefacts, archival documentation, and photographs to piece together how the Island has evolved from the early settlers in the distant past up to the present time. The centre also gives the history of the island’s many local landmarks, which include a broch (an Iron Age dry stone building), two castles and a cathedral, making it a must see attraction for any visitor to the island.
Housed in a stunning eco-friendly building, and perched on top of a hill, the Heritage Centre shares the same site as the award winning 19th century Cottar’s Cottage which has been fully restored to send visitors back to get a feel for late 19th and early 20th century island life.
The Heritage Centre is a real hub on the Island, where visitors and islanders alike can spend some time. So why not visit our museum where regular events and displays are held, take time out to enjoy our library, or to browse through our shop which sells some beautiful items designed and made on the Island, and then of course you can enjoy our café – not only for the wide ranging and delicious menu, but also for the lovely views and friendly welcome.
