How do you fancy grabbing your best mates to construct a raft out of everyday materials and then sail it in Oban Bay for the chance at prizes?
That’s right, it’s almost time for the Great Oban Bay Raft Race, where groups come together to build rafts of dubious seaworthiness, race them in the bay-all the while raising money for a great cause.
The Oban & Lorn Lions Club sponsors this long running event, which, many years ago, started as the Great Bed Race. But it has evolved into the perennially popular and always hilarious Raft Race, which brings out a huge crowd to cheer on the intrepid rafters, who are decked out in themed fancy dress that would do a pirate proud. Do all of the homemade rafts make it back in one piece to the beach with everyone dry? Well, you will just have to show up and find out! Or even get your own crew together and test your sailing skills!
The fun kicks off Saturday August 11 at 2pm on the George Street Beach. Enter a raft or just watch the fun. Find entry Forms in Hannah’s Newsagent on Stevenson Street or message Oban & Lorn Lions Facebook page.
