With an 87 mile cycle and 6237ft of climbing, the Oban Sportive April 21st and 22nd, offers adventure and fun through some of the UK’s most stunning scenery. Record breaking long distance cyclist Mark Beaumont will be setting the target time as he performs the Inaugural Ben Cruachan Hill Climb. Then Mark will give a motivational talk to the participants before everyone sets out for the Sportive, which features two courses for varying skill levels. The 56-mile short course winds through mostly quiet single-track roads in Argyll, while the long route, at 87 miles, takes riders around Loch Awe. Both courses start and finish at Oban’s Atlantis Leisure Centre, and the Sportive staff will provide plenty of food stops and support.
Beaumont is the star of the recent “Wild about Argyll” campaign showcasing all the adventure sport opportunities in the area.
“I absolutely loved filming the Wild about Argyll adventures, showcasing all the cycling and many other sports you can get up to on the West Coast, and through this have made many friends in the Oban area- and I am always up for any excuse to come back,’ Beaumont said. “The Ben Cruachan Hill Climb challenge and the Oban Sportive is a fantastic weekend of cycling in April and I will be there to cheer everyone on and ride as much as possible.
“There is such a fantastic community of cyclists in the Oban area, many of whom I have cycled with, and I am sure they will put on an amazing series of events for all abilities. I am most looking forwards to the Hill Climb, which is so far out of my comfort zone as I am an endurance bike rider, so it will hurt like hell and should be a lot of fun!”
Whether you are a seasoned pro or a keen amateur, the Oban Sportive will give you not only a rewarding challenge, but a chance to ride and learn with Beaumont, hang out with other like-minded cyclists, as well as enjoy all the stunning scenery and Highland hospitality that Oban and Lorn has to offer!
