Mountain Biking

In recent years the Forestry Commission have been opening up more of their forests to leisure users and the group that has benefited the most is mountain bikers.

Hundreds of miles of gravel topped tracks that allow whole days to be spent away from tarmac have meant a huge increase in the amount of mountain biking on offer. Some of these areas can be linked with sections of B roads to create weekend or even week tours.

Close study of the Ordnance Survey maps for the area together with the Forestry Commission leaflets reveals lots of possibilities for cyclists of all standards.

Mountain Biking in Argyll

Due to the hilly nature of the area in general some of the cycles can include the odd climb but that only leads to one natural consequence which is a corresponding downhill, some of which can test the nerves of even the most foolhardy.

There are several bike hire operations throughout Argyll and these shops will often give good advice as to the best local cycles for your standard. It is worth remembering that the weather in Argyll can often change quite dramatically and what started off as hot and sunny can change to being cold and wet later and clothing should be carried to cope with these eventualities as well as carrying puncture repair kits and equipment to allow you to continue to your destination on 2 wheels. Helmets are essential.
