On Loch Awe and Loch Avich

Loch Awe is a loch for all seasons and many interests. It is the longest loch in Britain, set in beautiful mountainous country full of history and legend. This loch is a mecca for anglers who wish to fish for wild Brown Trout, but they are occasionally surprised by very large Rainbow Trout, escapees from a fish farm.

The British record Wild Brown Trout (below) was caught here in 1996 and weighed 25lbs 5¾ozs and in 1997 the heaviest was over 19lbs.

Coarse Fishing

Loch Awe offers quality coarse fishing with several species available to the angler including Perch, Eels and Roach. However, most coarse anglers who visit this area are interested in the capture of one of the loch's legendary pike. Pike fishing on Loch Awe can be stupendous, especially during the summer when hard fighting, tail-walking, predators respond eagerly to lures and dead baits.

Loch Avich

A Loch Awe permit also allows fishing on Loch Avich, Loch Awe's smaller sister. This 6 mile stretch of beautiful water begins to fish at least a month later than Loch Awe and contains Brown Trout only, in May '97 a Brown Trout of 7lbs 5ozs was taken on a fly.

The one that didn't get away

The Awe Fisheries Trust

is a charity whose objectives are to conserve and enhance the native freshwater fish stocks in and around Loch Awe. Although now drawing on funds from a number of sources, the work of the Trust is heavily dependent upon contributions from the L.A.I.A. The Trust employs a biologist whose role is to conduct relevant research and monitoring in order to protect and maximise the existing fishery.
