Game, Coarse and Sea Angling by Ross Binnie

A wealth of varied angling is available within the Oban & Lorn area. The principal salmon rivers are the Awe and the Orchy but smaller rivers such as the Avich, the Euchar and Nell also have runs, although some may be best after spate conditions. Salmon fishing is by permit only and certain beats may be restricted to fly fishing.

For the trout angler a permit for the Oban & Lorn Angling Club "Hill Lochs" will provide access to over 20 areas of water, some of which are easily accessible. The Club produces a publication "Guide to the Lochs" which provides invaluable information.

Loch Awe is one of Scotland's largest fresh water lochs some 24 miles in length, and provides trout, (both rainbow and brown) fishing by all legal methods.

In addition there is some very fine pike fishing to be had with some very big specimens being regularly caught.

Loch Awe Improvement Association permits are essential  to fish this water, but it should be emphasized that these permits do not cover fishing for salmon and sea trout.

The rainbow trout angler is well served as the areas has 2 well stocked fisheries - both "fly" only. The first, at Inverawe, has 4 small lochs, one for novices, bank fishing only and tackle hire and tuition available. There is a tea room and well stocked shop which offers a selection of produce from the on-site smokehouse.

The second at McKays Loch is located beyond the golf course at Glencruitten. This attractive stretch of water is approximately 4 acres in area and can be fished traditional loch style as boats ae available for hire. A number of well placed fishing platforms are provided thus allowing large areas of the loch to be covered from the bank. This fishery is less than 10 minutes by car from Oban town centre.

The one that didn't get away

Sea angling boat trips in the area can be truly exceptional, with specimen grade fish being regularly caught; indeed the Scottish record hake was caught in Loch Etive.
In 1997 the new European record skate was caught in the sound of Mull. The sea angler can bank fish in any of the sea lochs, so no permits are necessary.
